WWW, December 2007 - A decade before Bob Marley and the Wailers would conquer the world with their brand of Reggae Music, Desmond Dekker would do the same with his brand of SKA.

Israelites, anyone?


Desmond "Dekker" Dacres was born in 1942. 21 years later, he would have his first tune released: "Honor Your Mother And Father" was a biblical reference to Jah Livity that so many in Jamaica know themselves to be involved with.

Many know his world-hit "Israelites", which also had a biblical theme as Desmond described the every day situation of the average Jamaican and compared it rightfully with the situation of the average Israelite in Babylonian exile.

Long before Bob Marley would conquer the world which provided him with the title "King of Reggae", Desmond Dekker would do the same which gave him the title "King of Ska".

Like Bob Marley, Desmond would provide his audience with a combination of righteous and spiritual lyrics on one hand, and lighter topics such as lover's affairs on the other.

Reasons enough for our host Cloverdale Dave to livicate a whole podcast to the works of the King of Ska. 25 tracks filled with Reasoning and Seasoning, with Sugar and Spice...

Every now and then, Dave will pop in to provide some information and remind you where you are listening to, but for the rest it's all about the man and his music.

WWW, December 23 2007 - This year marked the birth and development of "Dubroom Online".

Almost daily, the Dubroom front page is updated with at least one review and a small column by yours truly. In a way, you can say that Dubroom Online is a digital version of a mini-magazine.

Although Dubroom Online is posted first on the Dubroom front page, there are many more ways to keep yourself up-to-date.

Dubroom Online is also posted on MySpace and in Usenet's rec.music.reggae, the mother of all Reggae messageboards. It's also possible get every new edition through email, as we started posting on Blogspot as well.

WWW, December 2007 - Contemporary -digital- remixes of ancient -analogue- tunes form the spinal colom of this deep DUB excursion wherein we explore what Jamaican Music has done with many UK based artists.

Sure, some tunes have nothing to do with Reggae and you really need to know a little bit about DUB before you recognize just what that tune is doing in this Podcast anyway.

Sure, puritans will not even want to listen straight to the end and they will be missing out some thing there. For it is clear, that the 9th episode of "Stop That Train" is a true work of art in itself.

A work of art that should not be listened to as if it is just another Reggae Podcast, for you will be deeply disappointed when that is all you are looking for.

We'll hear fragments of what seems to be movie clips, with a slice of humor. There's even a special remix of the Special's classic "Ghost Town" created by Version Big-Fi, who are (associated with) the crew behind Stop That Train.

However, that one tune by a band called "The Cult" is definitely out-of-place, even though it has some DUB elements. Out-of-place, because the "DUB" part is way too short and the rest of the tune is self-explanatory.

Like all cults, the "Cult" is a problem. Skipping it simply solves the problem.

Or will it?

For the Dubroom, it definitely was one of the most turbulent and progressive years as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of independent promotion of (DUB) Reggae and Consciousness.

With over 300 daily updates filled with reviews, releases and research, the Dubroom definitely moved forward into new realms.

WWW, December 2007 - A very interesting 12" by UB40 is just one highlight of another massive Podcast by the UK based collective behind "Stop That Train". Don't let it pass you by, for the mix may not be available for download forever!

Johnny Clarke's "Leggo Violence" is a massive tune, even decades after it was originally released. That could be a reason just why Stop That Train #8 opens up with it.

Another reason could be, that the second selection is a very interesting "cover" version (including a heavy DUB) of "Leggo Violence", containing some "very UK" DUB Poetry.

Interesting seems to be the best word to describe the 56 minutes non-stop mix of Drum-And-Bass niceness. We're taken back into time, pulled back into this century, flown to Jamaica to meet spiritual people and driven to the UK where UB40 explains to us why they do not believe in JAH.

Yes, that's right. There are some people who play Reggae and do not believe in JAH.

Some of them are hypocrites because they will sing about Him anyway, but this cannot be said about the band who named themselves after the well-fare form they had to fill in before they became one of the top Reggae bands of the world.

"Don't Let It Pass You By" is a very heartical tune by the band, even though statements such as "There Is No One Coming With That Freedom Train" and suggestions how spiritual people are blind will cause disagreements with many who know themselves to be on that train anyway and don't consider themselves to be blind at all...

But after listening to the excellent tune with superb DUB version, no one can be in their right mind and deny UB40's well-deserved place within Reggae Music.

A great Podcast, with nuff brain-food!

Reasoning and Seasoning, it's all there in the 7th episode of the "Stop That Train" Podcast. Nuff DJ's and nuff DUB engineers enter to deliver some of their strongest works, both old and new.

The well-picked selection of Floor-shakers and Waist-whiners displays just how versatile the formula of Reggae Dancehall and DUB really is.

The non-stop mix opens up with some spicy Rub a Dub, goes further into a conscious tune by Tappa Zukie and forwards with a digital remix of his priceless MPLA riddim.

Yes, the first 15 minutes definitely set the tone for the rest of the 50 minutes: massive is the word.

However, he wouldn't deny his existence on the planet and knows how much Reggae Music is needed. Performing world-wide for audiences hungry for conscious Reggae Music, I Jah Man brings some upfull vibes to each and everyone.

I Jah Man is so special, that he's not even listen in books like The Rough Guide To Reggae and an Internet search for Trevor Sutherland will not provide much more either.

The statement printed in bold turned out to be untrue!

An attentive reader of the Dubroom pointed out (see below), that I (Messian Dread) actually made a huge mistake while writing the review: I did not look close enough in the Rough Guide to Reggae as I JAH Man is definitely mentioned in the book.
