Radio Dubroom 2011 Chapter 12: JAH Kingdom Come

JAH KINGDOM COME
RADIO DUBROOM 2011 CHAPTER 12

Comments
WWW, November 2011 - It's been a while since the previous chapter of Radio Dubroom 2011 has been posted online, but good things come to those that wait and here it is: a brand new 1 1/2 hour long non-stop mix carrying some heavyweight Roots and Dub from different times and places.
Starting with a healthy selection of old-skool Jamaican material, this chapter surely has many different styles to offer. The Congo's with their classic "Ark of the Covenant", Cornell Campbell's excellent discomix "Lion of Judah", the magnificent Horace Andy with a meditation of the "Youth of Today" (also in Discomix) and Gregory Isaacs with yet another classic from the motion picture "Rockers", followed by Dillinger and Prince Fari form the opening segment. Classic, old skool material that will not only appeal to the elderly among us but equally to folks born at a later point in tome. Good DUB included, of course.

After this, we're diving straight into a selection of UK/Euro DUB and Roots. Dutch singer Lyrical Benjie with two massive tunes, one carrying a heavyweight Dub part and from the UK there's the Talking Dog with not just crucial vibes but equally crucial lyrics. Lyrics that should appeal to the lovers of consciousness as Babylon System is falling even though she claims the opposite.

There's more: From the excellent AKA Dub Part One compilation released by the Scandinavian LUSH RECORDS label, to the Italian DUB Community and even to Japan where Dry and Heavy keep playing their massive Roots and DUB in Old Skool Style. There's French DUB as well, with conscious contents: almost a given when it comes to European contemporary Roots and Culture.

The show closes off with an extended version by the UK based "Dub From Atlantis" collective, more or less a cover version of a classic track of which yours truly has forgotten the name. Last but not least, here are the Abassi All-Stars with vocalist Kenny Knots once again explaining that Babylon really has a Wicked Intention, something that has to be mentioned.

Babylon Observer Video Report: Reefer Madness In The Netherlands Part 2

WWW, October 2011 - Reefer madness in the Netherlands continues as the right-wing minority coalition of the country announced it will label Cannabis products with a THC level higher than 15% as "hard drugs".

The controversial decision has been made without parliamental approval and is already in effect.

The decree is part of a government crack-down on the legendary Dutch tolerance policy towards Cannabis and will affect Coffee Shops and it's owners.

Secretary of "security and justice" Ivo Opstelten announced that police will raid coffee shops in search of the so-called "hard drugs".

Should Cannabis with a THC level above 15% be found, coffee shop owners will be persecuted as hard drug dealers.

VIBRONICS - SAFE IN THE DUB/STRIVE

VIBRONICS - SAFE IN THE DUB/STRIVE VERSION
DUBROOM MP3 REVIEW
More from/about This Artist

WWW, July 2011 (From the Archives) - The specific sound of Vibronics lands very well into the ears of the lover of the better UK DUB. This will not be different with the two free tracks reviewed on this page. "Safe in The Dub" and "Strive Version" are truly some gems for the heart and soul.

"Safe In The Dub" is an up-tempo steppers rhythm with a monotonous bassline, sweeping synthesizers, flanged skanks and a couple of melodic lines here and there. Instruments are very well dropped in and out during the mix, the drum and bass keep everything flowing: this is the works of a Heavyweight DUB Champion and so it is.

"Strive Version" opens up with some crucial singing in sound and lyrical content, then everything turns into a huge echo, the bass and the drum drop in and we know we're into yet another riddim by the mighty Vibronics who seem to can do no wrong when it comes to musical productions. Skillfulness galore!

Radio Dubroom 2011 Chapter 11: European Dub Rising

EUROPEAN DUB RISING
RADIO DUBROOM 2011 CHAPTER 11

Comment(s)
WWW, July 2011 - In this selection of heavyweight UK/Euro Dub and Roots, we start of with a couple of new free and legal releases, only to continue with a selection of better material featuring -among many more- Mad Professor and Slimmah Sound. Nuff vocals, more Dubs, a lot of it reviewed at mp3.dubroom.org.
There might be a crisis inna Europe at the moment, but it has little to do when it comes to the inspiration and output of the UK/Euro Dub and Roots Massive. We've seen some very crucial releases lately, of which we play the opening track followed by Alambic Conspiracy's contribution to the Third chapter of the Italian Dub Community Showcase series.

Followed is a to the UK (DFA, Mad Professor, Echo Ranks and Dub Terror, Jah Warrior and Peter Broggs, Bush Chemist, Alpha and Omega) and the Netherlands (Lyrical Benjie, Slimmah Sound and Jah Melody). Heavyweight Dubs and vocal tracks, all of them pure niceness for the true Rootsman.

The selection closes of with two titles from the Italian Dub Community Showcase series: BR Stylers as well as Moa Anbessa can be considered among the top of the Italian Dub scene and this is -0as can be heard- not without reason.

European Dub Rising, to chant down Babylon and lift up Consciousness. Enjoy!

Radio Dubroom 2011 Chapter 10: Blesseth Basslines

BLESSETH BASSLINES
RADIO DUBROOM 2011 CHAPTER 10

WWW, July 2011 - Opening up with a healthy selection of (brand) new Roots, going further into 1980's Rub a Dub, moving forward to contemporary UK/Euro Dub and Roots: Chapter 10 of Radio Dubroom 2011 can be called a versatile selection without exaggeration.
Everton Blender opens up with a cool and dreadly One Drop riddim from his album "It's My Time", in which he explains where he's coming from and not going to. Luciano takes over and gives thanks and praise to the Almighty One, a thing which Gappy Ranks also does in a brand new upcoming release by VP Records. Also brand new from VP is "Times Like This" by Queen Ifrica, taken from the latest Reggae Gold installment. Natty King closes of this introductionary section of contemporary Roots Reggae, with a track called "Pray Today" which you can legally download for free.

Next up is a selection of early 1980's Reggae. The classic "Worries In The Dance" by Frankie Paul, recently re-released by VP Records, has not lost one milligram of it's heavyweight. The very same can be said about "Promised Land", Aswad's cooperation with Dennis Brown also re-released by VP. We move further with a couple of dubs by Scientist and two titles by Earl 16 and Mikey Dread, all of which are recently reviewed at http://mp3.dubroom.org and can be legally downloaded for free.

The second half of the show contains some very powerful vibes from the UK/Euro DUB and Roots front. Opening up with the heartfelt "Conscious Man" from Das Pilah, followed by Daweh Congo's "Straight Up Conscious" of which we also play the Dub only to continue with more and more Dub: France-based No More Babylon, Jah Roots from the Netherlands, the US based Rastafarians, and Bush Chemists from UK.

Bush Chemists, Jah Warrior, RDK Sound System, Youthman Stepper, Vibronics, Killa Sound Yard: they all come with one or more titles in the heavyweight Steppers selection that closes of this chapter of Radio Dubroom 2011. Heavyweight Steppers in the style made popular throughout the UK and subsequently the rest of Europe. Digital sounds combined with heartical instrumental playing, lyrical contributions and above all: skillful Dub engineering.

Play loud, louder than loud and when you have a subwoofer you might want to put it on too and disturb the neighbor with consciousness once more!

Jah Roots - Whole Lotta Dub (2002)

JAH ROOTS - WHOLE LOTTA DUB (2002)
FROM THE DUBROOM STUDIO ARCHIVES
Net Label Website

WWW, July 2011 - Once lost but now found: straight from the dusty corners of the Dubroom Studio Archives, where this recording has been mixed probably somewhere in the early years of the 21st century. It's an instrumental track with a whole lotta live Dub mixing by Messian Dread and some masterful keyboard works of Sure D over an Ire One Drop rhythm laid down by Imro Fedor on Drums and Erik on Bass.

You could argue, that the title is not really covering the contents of the track. After all, there is not a single instance in which the drum and the bass play without any other instrument rolling along. Therefore, as said, this is an instrumental track.

Sure D, the keyboard player, recorded several tracks into the -rather primitive- multitrack, all showcasing his talents and skill. The drums was recorded rather primitive, too. Having no budget at all, just two microphones were used and since there was no bass microphone present, the bass drum doesn't really come forward in the mix. Still, a tight drum and bass section can easily be discerned.

So, what about the title?

The answer is obviously in the mix itself. Even though the keyboards are never completely cut off, there is still a Whole Lotta DUB mixing going on. It was mixed live by Messian Dread, everything done in just one take, with the intention to apply subtle Dub mixing in order to emphasize the talents of the players of instruments.

No programming was involved whatsoever during the whole process. In fact, the computer is only used to record the mix and subsequent mastering. Definitely a rare recording, too good to not be shared with those that are interested in the Dubroom's history.

WWW, July 2011 - Usually, a Showcase album indicates that the titles come with a Vocal and a Dub part in one long mix. Not in the DUB TO DUB Showcase, though. The French producer came up with this Iriginal concept, worked out in a excellent eight-track Net Album.

It's not just the concept of a "Dub to Dub Showcase" which should be recognized as Iriginal, Hatman's music is kind of Iriginal as well. It is clear that he knows his instruments and has some pretty in-depth ideas about production and engineering as well. New Format Of mp3.dubroom.org Reaching Final Stages

WWW, June 29 2011 - Well, I finally am at the point wherein I expect to soon be ready with the renovation of http://mp3.dubroom.org.

In any case, new reviews can be added in the new format. "All" I still have to do is:

- transform the artist pages in the MP3 portal into the new format. Some already are in there: take a look at http://mp3.dubroom.org/scientist.htm or http://mp3.dubroom.org/mikeydread.htm and see how easy it is to get the tunes and/or read the reviews.
- Transport the podcast reviews to the new portal
- Make more pages for net labels and podcast creators

When everything is finished, I will delete the MP3 museum as well as some other features which are now incorporated in the new format in other ways. Basically, http://mp3.dubroom.org/ will contain a section of single track MP3 reviews, a section of reviews of Net Albums, a section of reviewed Podcast and artist pages, all of which are browseable. For example, when you go to http://mp3.dubroom.org/mp3downloads.htm you will find pages containing 25 links to tunes each. When you go to http://mp3.dubroom.org/mp3albums.htm you will find pages containing links to 10 albums on each page. The podcast section, as said, is close to empty still.

I hope you will find using http://mp3.dubroom.org/ more easy than before. I hope, Jah Willing, to be ready with all the artist pages within like seven days or so.

ITALIAN DUB COMMUNITY SHOWCASE VOLUME 3

ITALIAN DUB COMMUNITY SHOWCASE VOLUME 3DUBROOM MP3 ALBUM REVIEWNet Label Website

WWW, June 2011 - The long wait is over: widely anticipated throughout the online Dub community, here is the third chapter of the phenomenal Italian Dub Community Showcase serial. Fifteen titles, thirty tracks, and once again the selection is stronger than strong. Consciousness and Dubwise galore, this is definitely a very precious gift from the Italian DUB Community to the World Wide DUB Massive. Respect is more than due!

A precious gift it is, indeed. There is no reason for anyone to consider the fact that this free Net Album was released under Creative Commons Copyright to be a sign of a low quality contents. This is a sign of life from a very vibefull Italian DUB Community which cannot be refused or even denied.

The fifteen different names range from the more well known names in Dub land like the Alambic Conspiracy, Dub Engine and Wicked Dub Division to artists like Cultural Sound System of whom not so much material is released via the Net Label channels. A Serious selection fe true, we're speaking about stricktly High Quality Low Bass Roots Reggae, showcase style.

Even though this is extremely difficult to choose, nevertheless, two highlights.

Voiced by Idren Natural, "No More War" by Cultural Sound System is a hard hitting Steppers track. The vocal part is actually a discomix and the Dub is superb. This is the kind of tune you want to listen to again and again, both for the message and the music

Another hard hitting Steppers which stands out is "Hunger/Hunger Dub" by Dub Shiloh. The track starts of with sounds, after which the up-tempo drum and bass line pop in the mix. The first mix might be kind of crucial, the second mix (officially entitled Hunger Dub) really is. This one will keep you jumping all the while, especially with some better speakers.

All in all, Italian DUB Community Showcase 3 was more than worth the wait, the anticipations were not in vain. There's unity and cooperation in this community, no partiality and no competition.

This is a serious selection of some heavy-duty, heavyweight Euro Dub and Roots you just cannot refuse!

This album was released under CreativeCommons Copyright, which means you can share it provided that the original zipfile is being offered without any change. Another aspect of the CC copyright is, that no money should be made and therefor this album is offered to you free of charge. For more specific information, look to the information in the archive. ALAMBIC CONSPIRACY - THE MISSING DUB VERSIONS

ALAMBIC CONSPIRACY - THE MISSING DUB VERSIONS
DUBROOM MP3 ALBUM REVIEW

image

WWW, June 2011 - San Martino di Campagna, Italy. It's December 2010 and the Alambic Conspiracy DUB Studio is settling down in this new location, north of Venice. When everything is put in place, some older recording pop up: the Missing DUB Versions. With names like BR Stylers and Zion Train to name just two, these DUB Versions have fortunately now been found. Sixteen DUB Versions, that is!

The outstanding work on The Missing DUB Versions is not just found in the incredible riddims that serve as the foundation found on this album. It's equally, perhaps even more, in the art of DUB mixing applied. Most of the things are done in a stricktly old skool tradition of analogue effects and mixing board. Remarkable, when you realize that most of the work was done during the last three years.

Even more remarkable is the fact that according to the conspirators themselves, none of these tracks were ever intended for release. Why that would be, is a question to most: even for the collective themselves. It's truly a very interesting exposition of old skool methodology on new skool Euro and UK Roots Reggae riddims.

From the top to the very last drop, the album continues to have this special vibe. Given the fact that the tracks were recorded by a variety of musicians and studio's, a noteworthy point. The Alambic Conspiracy knows who to mix their DUB and this album will show it to every self respecting lover of the better contemporary DUB.

DUBALIZER - IN TRANSE

DUBALIZER - IN TRANSE
DUBROOM MP3 ALBUM REVIEW

image

WWW, June 2011 - Hailing from Sao Paulo, Dubalizer knows how to make some very interesting mixes in which he takes the concept of Dub as his guideline, while kind of taking straight back to the source those techniques that derived from DUB.

Unfortunately, In Transe does only contain three tracks. These three tracks all have their own specific vibe and style even though everything is undoubtly coming from the same producer. From the magnificent opening track to the heartically voiced middle one to the more Dubstep orientated closing tune, this is more than interesting to listen to.

Babylon Observer Video Report: Reefer Madness in the Netherlands 2011

REEFER MADNESS IN THE NETHERLANDS 2011
FAR RIGHT-WING ADMINISTRATION CONSIDERING PUTTING STRONG WEED ON HARD DRUGS LIST

WWW, June 24 2011 - A commission to advice the Dutch administration concerning the nation's drugs policy claims that cannabis with over 15% THC should be considered hard drugs in Dutch criminal law.

In interviews with Dutch public TV, the ministers of Health and Justice respond positively as they enter the parliament building to officially receive the advice from the commission.

When the advice is brought into law, this would bring the Netherlands back to the days of Reefer Madness as the world famous Dutch tolerance policy towards Cannabis would de facto end.

An Open Letter to Judge James Moody Regarding Sentencing for Buju Banton

An Open Letter to Judge James Moody Regarding Sentencing for Buju Banton

By: Natasha Von Castle

CANADA
- As you are well aware, Buju Banton faces sentencing on June 23rd for his conviction on the charge conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute.

We cannot change the conviction, however, our collective voices can influence the Judge to reduce the suggestion of a 15 year sentence.

Below is my open letter to the judge. If it is within you, add your voice and let the Judge know how you feel regarding the amount of time Buju serves. My letter is included below.

An open letter to Judge James Moody sent via e-mail: chambers_flmd_moody@flmd.uscourts.gov

And via airmail:

The Honourable James S. Moody Jr.
United States District Judge
Tampa Division
801 North Florida Avenue
Tampa, Florida 33602

Dear Judge Moody;

In your many years within the justice system as a lawyer and Judge, I am sure you have come across cases that have either touched you, or touched the community which you represent. A touch could be a personal understanding of one or some of the components in a case, just as a touch can be pride in knowing that the justice system worked (the way it’s supposed to) in making sure the right people receive the right punishment according to their crime(s).

Your honor, I am writing this letter with the belief that I, on behalf of the community I represent, can appeal to you on a ‘touch’ level.

Before your court is the matter of Mr. Mark ‘Buju Banton’ Myrie who is due to be sentenced on June 23rd by you, for the conviction he received on the charge of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute. I appeal to you to reduce Buju’s sentence from the recommended 15 years.

Buju is not like any man you will ever meet. He is a friend, a father, a husband and one of the pillars in the Caribbean community; not just Jamaica, but every Caribbean community in every city around the world.

As one of our pillars, he has given the community songs which nourish the soul. This nourishment has turned youths away from crime, has strengthened families and healed those who were not well.

How do we know this is true? The testimony of countless of which I am one. He spoke for me when he sang ‘I wanna go ahead without turning back / and now I see myself heading for the trap / I wanna break free but I feel trapped / a voice inside me saying don’t stop ….’ Those words were taken from the song “Optimistic Soul” which encouraged listeners to not give up, no matter how daunting the situation looks. Those were Buju’s words from 2010. If we go back 10 years before that, we have ‘there was good and evil / we chose good ….’

When an announcement is made that Buju will be performing, the show(s) sell out. Tickets are purchased by people who want a live touch of Buju’s nourishing words. Fans leave the concerts fulfilled and refocused on the right path.

We, the community, need Buju, and we need you to understand his importance to us. Because of these needs, I ask you to not sentence Buju to 15 years in prison. I ask that you consider his humanitarian works with the children of his homeland Jamaica and I ask that you consider his impact on the Caribbean community around the world. Once you’ve considered these, I ask that you set a sentence that will not see Buju away from us for a lengthy period of time.

Thank you,

Natasha Von Castle

The administration wants to introduce a club pass for the coffee shops, which can only be obtained by local residents. The show opens with a classic tune by Yabby You singing praises to Yesus Kristos, JAH Himself Who came down to save His children. Babylon Observer Video Report: The DEA And The Dutch

WWW, February 2011 - According to documents recently released by Wikileaks, the American DEA is conducting what they call "controlled drugs deliveries" within the country of the Netherlands. The Americans do this without official permission, which they call "unofficial" but could better be called "illegal". The Babylon Observer watches an item from Dutch public TV and in accordance with Fair Use laws, shares his observation...

In the leaked documents, the American ambassador in the Netherlands is complaining how the Dutch Justice department does not want to go into official DEA requests to conduct these "controlled deliveries of drugs". Apparently things changed in the end of 2005, because in the first half of 2006, there were already six of such deliveries conducted on Dutch soil and with cooperation of the Dutch police.

What changed?

A political situation, perhaps... Or something more sinister...

However, the Wikileaks show that the Americans are now very pleased because they found a way to bypass the Dutch Justice department by conducting so-called "police to police information", that is: information from one police unit to another.

As a professor in criminology, very much esteemed in the Netherlands, this is either done illegally by the police who doesn't inform the justice department or it is done illegally by the Justice department itself, because no official request is done in either case.

ERROL JUDAH AND NEOPHYTE STEPPERS - LIFE (IT NA FUNNY)
FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD

WWW, January 2011 - Taken from the album "Walt Rides Again" which is available from sites like amazon.com, "Life (It Na Funny)" is an excellent DUB track in the ROOTS tradition, with full-blown horns and a massive drum and bass line. The Neophytes, who have been around long enough to be among the Experienced, team up with vocalist Errol Judah in what can only be described as a must-have for your ever growing collection of free and legal MP3 files.
The Dub mixing is excellent, there are enough parts with lyrical content to guarantee the conscious aspect while the instruments in their turn form a perfect input for the echo machine and reverberation device. Life is not funny for the sufferers, but music make them help through in that mystical way which is perfectly captured in the (free and legal) release. Consider purchasing the album, more than worth it!

Another aspect of the CC copyright is, that no money should be made and therefor this track is offered to you free of charge. The Dubroom Renovation Project (5): Studio Dubroom

DUBROOM RENOVATION PROJECT (5) - STUDIO DUBROOM
FROM THE WEBMASTER

DUBROOM, February 2011 - I've managed to renovate another part of the Dubroom, this time it is http://studio.dubroom.org/ which is an artist/producer-only section filled with tips, tricks and downloads. Most of the material present is older but now the studio is ready to be expanded again. Some material has been taken off-line, though. These are parts which were hardly ever read or were surely not about to be updated even they they should. I hope that everything is more overseeable.

The different loops, samples, soundfonts which you can download now all have their own download page, from where you can also click to comment on the material, either via the blog or via the forum. I do plan to share some more material to download pretty soon but I cannot say when that will be.

DUBROOM DRUMS 0.1 (BETA)

This drum loop is a Steppers rhythm at 133 BPM, both in WAV and DR. REX format. The loop comes in three parts: one with an intro-break, one with a break in the rhythm, and one with the rhythm itself.

It is a first try on what could possibly become an interesting pack of drum loops at a later stage.

DUBROOM 808 DRUM LOOPS VOLUME 2

The second episode in our presentation of Reggae Loops created with the the TR808 Drum Machine Sounds contains just one rhythm. It's a 121 BPM One Drop and contains 28 different loops. There are several different variation in the rhyhm, four different fills and several loops with a crash cymbal hit.

The One Drop is ideal for some heavy roots sounds, even when they are created with the TR 808 sounds. Especially by making your own sequence of the loops, you can create some pretty complicated but solid rhythms. Usually there is only "one drop" of the bassdrum in every measure, on the third count, which brings this solidness. But the creative hi hat pattern and several variations make it also interesting for those with an ear for detail. That's the power of the One Drop and it shows especially in heavy DUB.

The loops are constructed in such a way, that you can easily copy any loop after any loop. You can even use software like Cool Edit and simple "open append" the loops you want in order to get a nice drum track.

Beware, though. Although the loops are all 4 to 8 measure long, they do not actually start on the first measure. This becomes clear, when you listen to the introduction roll. So start with the introduction roll, and listen closely. When you count the measure in blocks of 8 measure, know that the loops start with the "last measure" and then continues with the first seven (or three) measures. The reason why this is done, is so that all loops can follow eachother easy. For in every measure, there is some decay of the hand clap from the previous one. This is also the reason why you hear the "click" at the start of every measure. When you copy/paste them in a sequence, this click is gone.

DUBROOM 808 DRUM LOOPS VOLUME 1

Especially for the producers of computer based DUB, the Dubroom has released a package of Drum Loops created with the TR 808 Sounds. The 808 is a vintage Drum Computer and it's electronic sounds are highly popular in circles of producers of electronic music like Trance and Techno. But also in Reggae and DUB, especially in the more dancehall orientated styles, the drums are used as well.

The package, simply called "Dubroom 808 Drum Loops part One", contains four different directories of rhythms. Each directory has an introduction roll and two fills as well as an avarage of five different variations of the drum beat itself. Some loops have to be inserted on the second measure, others in the first. The introduction roll will show this.

Each directory has an introduction roll and two fills as well as an avarage of five different variations of the drum beat itself. Some loops have to be inserted on the second measure, others in the first. The introduction roll will show this.

The four rhythms are:

  • 133 BPM Steppers - A powerfull rhythm, militant and yet easy dancable. Great for constructing with a melodic bassline and some vocals.
  • 140 BPM Two Drop - Perfect for some rub a dub style, some cool skanking. With a monotonous bassline, this track is ideal for some crucial Dub mixing as well.
  • 147 BPM One Drop - Often, in Reggae the One Drop is played with a rimshot on the snare. The TR808 doesn't have a rimshot, but a very nice handclap. Together with the snaredrum, you'll get a pretty interesting "electro roots" sound ideal for creating some ire riddim.
  • 158 BPM Half Drop - The "half drop" is like a "two drop" with the bassdrum on the first and third count. In this one the bassdrum is on the first count only. It's the most dancable rhythm of this loop collection.
