WWW, March 2021 - As Babylon continues to do what she always does, spreading lies and confusion while keeping people in bondage and slavery, the Most High has Roots Daughter Rubi Du from New Zealand with a message of encouragement for Jah people.

Raised by her parents who were connected to the Twelve Tribes of Israel organization, Rubi Du grew up with Reggae Music and Consciousness. She's been active in New Zealand as a vocalist, and what a voice indeed.

This track, a production of Rob Smith of Smith & Mighty fame comming in several different versions, is not just a massive UK Steppers. It's a message of Truth that will make those that love Jah step up in encouragement while the wicked get another warning.

That source being the UK DUB Twins Alpha and Omega with a brand new release on their Steppas Records label. Nine vocal tracks featuring a world wide group of singers alongside their DUB counterpart carrying the unmistakable Alpha and Omega sound.

Dub Dynasty is Alpha and Omega and Alpha Steppa: yes, the next generation. Son and nephew, to be exact. 

With that out of the way, let's talk about the music. Thundering is the right word for the floor-shaking bass sound that we're used to when it comes to AO productions. This double vinyl release doesn't lack any of it. The real interesting part of Thundering Mantis is the fact that not just do we have a whole range of vocalists ranging from a more meditative eastern style talk to heartical singing (Prince David), there is an equal amount of producers who lent some of their material to Alpha and Omega. 

It's Alpha and Omega, yes, and it's more.

With two vocals and two dubs featured on Radio Dubroom 2014 Chapter Eight, you can get an idea.

This is a musical release that's, well, kind of obligatory when you are into the more heavy side of Sound System DUB. Whether you're into digital download, CD or just plain vinyl for that bass sound the choice is yours.

WWW, September 2014 - What's the difference between a Showcase and a Dub Showcase, Ariwa Style? Well, the fact that not every vocal track is followed by it's Dub (which you can easily change in your player) plus the fact that there's an extra Dub version Of "Three Meals A Day" labeled Sound System Dub. Luciano and Mad Professor In Fine Style!

Of course, when Luciano sings into the multi track recorder at Ariwa studio with Mad Professor at the controls he listens to excellent music. Of course, when Ariwa prepares for Luciano they will come with a variety of musical works that will all emphasize a different side of The MessenJah. Of course a collaboration between Luciano and Ariwa brings niceness.

This is a Dub Showcase, not a Showcase and not a Dub Album. This is an album about Luciano, and the Dubs are there to recall the vocal tracks while they're still fresh in your memory. While Luciano showcases his many sides, from smooth Lovers' Rock to strong Prophetic Calls and Chants to JAH, Ariwa shows they have just the right music for the right vibe. After all, Roots and Lovers Rock are two specialties of the London-based studio's.

As the album plays for this review, the Dubs are all programmed to be played directly after it's vocal counterpart. That means, no change in the sequence for the first 4 titles. Tracks 9-11 subsequently are three vocals, followed by four dubs. Almost one hour of good vibes, freedom sounds and nice dubwise.

The arrangements, playing of instruments, backing and lead vocals, everything is perfectly worked out. Luciano gives his best, while Mad Professor does his best to emphasize the MessenJah in Dub Showcase style. This is not a Dub style for an all-dub album, this is a Dub style that gives you meditation, gives you some extra time to skank pon di riddim. A Dub style that makes you hear new things every time you play the music.

How shall we call it? What about Roots Lovers Rock Reggae, to combine the two dominant styles on Deliverance Dub Showcase? Mad Professor showing he's not just one of the Dub masters in the world, he knows how to produce music by using top musicians and how to mix Dubs from that music in fine style.

From the very first track, a crucial rendering of Dennis Brown's song that gave the title to this album as well, to the very last one ("Three Meals A Day, No Rent To Pay and No Wife To Obey, Talking Bout Detention....") which is a heavyweight Roots Steppers with equal Heavyweight Dub Mixing, this album is what it says. This is Mad Professor showcasing Luciano in his own special style.

So, what was that about an extra Dub version called Sound System Dub? This is Luciano singing from the top to the last drop with Mad Professor mixing the music in Dub style.

Get all tracks, or just a few. When you're into Dub, get the Dub from "Three Meals" called "One Dub A Day".

WWW, September 2014 - Vocal tracks, Discomixes and of course DUB Shots. "A Ruff Guide To Ariwa" has it all and look at the title: it's not a "Ruff Guide To Mad Professor"! The well-chosen title for this compilation of sounds from the London based Studio has a few classics from "back then", but it also features some of the -outstanding- work of Joe Ariwa. Not to mention the all-star list of further appearances, that is.

It should not be a surprise: over here at the Dubroom we're not ashamed to big up Ariwa wherever possible. That's not just because of the original and even leading sounds and riddims, not just because of the consistency in quality with the enormous quantity. It's equally because of the importance of Ariwa for (DUB) Reggae in general.

No, this is not an exaggeration.

It's one of the few studio's that were founded in the late 1970's, only to continue to this year 2014 and still release all forms of Reggae, from Lovers' Rock and Roots Daughters to Heavy, heavy Dub. Throughout the decades careers were launched, revamped, extended. Bringing consciousness on many levels and issues, being responsible for the incorporation of DUB in many musical styles (Massive Attack, Ruts DC) and thus spreading the vibe to millions and millions.

It's truly incredible to see just what Don Goliath has produced just the last 1 1/2 year or so. In spite of his name, this one Goliath has nothing against Jah and even more, he is active in spreading JAH Music into this next century and generations with his unique sound. It's a sound that many will say is "Dub Step" and not just because of the four-letter word in the term Roots Step. However, this is Reggae and it is even Roots Reggae. 

Reggae is a rhythm that one can play in many styles. Roots Reggae is a rhythm and a vibe that one can play in many styles as well. Yes, it is a big mistake to look at Reggae as a genre of music. It's not. It can be that old Studio One Sound, it can be the 21st Century Rootsstep Sound, but it remains to be the same rhythm. This, in a nutshell, is Don Goliath's Rootsstep Sound.

This is a sound that will appeal to lovers of Dubstep and it will appeal to more open-minded lovers of Roots Reggae too.

This is a sound that gets the support from a whole army of well-known vocalists like U Roy, featured on this album. Not without reason, for what it shows is that the sound might change throughout the generations, the message does not and the music does not.

This is a sound that you should check out and support, when you are positively interested in the promotion of (DUB) Reggae and Consciousness. First things first: this is Singer Tempa's debute album. He is the house MC for the Lion Heart Sound System, while he voices for MessenJah as well. WWW, July 2014 - The first thing you should avoid is to take the title of this EP serious. You should take the name Bryan Art serious, though, and the four excellent musical works of this release even more. Why? Well, that's the four dollar question you will see answered in this review of Fresh Start, the EP.

First, the music. Four excellent contemporary Jamaican Roots Reggae tracks, perfectly recorded into the multitrack by Bryan Art's FILE13 Band. This is the kind of Roots Reggae that counters the slackness and emptiness that is the majority of (Jamaican) Dancehall. This is the kind of Jamaican Music that brings blessings to the whole world. 

With special appearances by none other than Sizzla and Queen Ifrica accompanying his evidently talented and skilled voice, "Fresh Start" is an essential introduction to this multi-tasker in Reggae Music as well. The name Bryan Art, namely, should need no introduction and the fact that it might is a shame. So in a way, Fresh Start is a proper title. It's a fresh start for us as listeners, a fresh chance to get ourselves familiar with this very interesting brethren.

Bryan Art is a guitar player, song writer, band leader, and a singer. Among other things. He has toured all over North America and Europe, sometimes as part of a backing band and sometimes in a different setting. He has been the guitar player of the Fire House Crew, that is King Tubby's House Band personally formed by the Godfather of Dub himself, band leader for Bushman's backing band, the list goes on and on. The music of this Art is not to be ignored or underestimated!

Usually, a little name dropping sets the stage but this would absolutely not be justifiable in the case of "Lost Books 2". This is a release in the "all-killer-no-filler" category, where we're taken from a militant steppers to a meditative two drop and back again, while conscious messages are being delivered all the time as well.

WWW, April 2014 - Three years after his debute album, Uptown Rebel returns in the year 2014 with a heavyweight nine-track DUB album. With collaborations by Dub Machinist, Sammy Gold and Zion UK, Random Road has become a more than pleasant work of DUB Art.

Electronic DUB Art, that is. In a Roots Reggae Style.

The opening track, featuring Sammy Gold at the microphone is an easy going One Drop style Roots tune, with conscious lyrics for your heart and soul to meditate upon. During the massive Dub version, for example. Bredda Sammy surely has a message for each and everyone to take heed while Uptown Rebel has the riddim and the Dub mixing skills to accompany it just in style.

WWW, April 2014 - He won a Grammy award multiple times, and that's just for his musical works. His teaching and writing skills have not gone unnoticed either. Talking about Joe Ferry, dr. Joe Ferry: widely acclaimed bass player and record producer as well as talented writer. But this is about the music. Music with King Tubby and Augustus Pablo to be precise.
 
We're talking about "Perfida DUB", unmistakably a Jamaican Roots Rockers tune from the seventies. A Dub carrying King Tubby's mixing skills as well as musicians playing in ways that super stars can only dream of. 555 Crown Street carrying the works of Augustus Pablo is a true classic, needs no introduction or description other than the remark it is present on this album. Which says a thing about Joe Ferry!

Of course, these two tracks are appetizers. Appetizers for what is coming. And what is coming is more fat DUB and Reggae in the Roots tradition. Solid riddims, excellent works by the musicians and the engineer, matching perfectly with the classic historic recordings on "Connected". You'll even hear resemblances of Black Uhuru recordings in the guitar play ("Unwind" by Menace).

It's not only Dub even though the album is truly all about the Dub. There's a vocal track by Uzimon and The Dons called "Don't Go Bang", a thing which makes you realize something about the title of the album. Makes you want to listen to the Dub of the track as well... There's Victor Rice again (reviewed at mp3.dubroom.org), bringing you "Bango" which is kind of a hybrid between Dub and a vocal track. There's the Big Ska Band with a Dub that could be taken off a secret Dub album by the Skatalites.

If Joe Ferry's "Connected: Mob Stories and Reggae Riddims" resembles anything of the book that this release accompanies, you might want to check that out as well. The album surely brings that upfull yet intense vibe only Reggae Dub can bring especially when it is played in, as said, the Roots Tradition.

WWW, April 2014 - Bass player and producer Joe Ferry has been in the business of Reggae music for many decades. He's been there, done it. Four tracks on a limited 12" released in 2014 to give you a taste of the crucial stuff he is/was involved in!

The 12" opens up with an old skool Dub by yet another expert in the discipline: Victor Rice. Second tune has a title we will not repeat here, but needless to say that here we have another analogue Dub in true old skool style.
The B-side carries another two tunes, with some fatter bass and more intense mixing. The Channel Tubes playing a solid Roots riddim with skillful effects on the bass and organ play Jackie Mittoo style. The Dons closing off with "Satta Big Dub": four minutes of Old Skool mixing in ambient style if you know what I mean.

A true collector's item, get one while you still can!

  WWW, September 2012 - If only for the hard-hitting "Business of War" and it's even harder hitting DUB version, you just have to download this 2010 release by the Swiss based Audioactivity Net Label who brought us such excellent compilations as DUB Propaganda and DUB Disaster 1 and 2. 

As a matter of fact, Roots 'n' Future is a project and collective based around the drummer of the band High Note, Dino. When this is the first of many Dubplates for Powerfull System, it's a very promising one. There's a wide variety of styles on the album, even some Dubstep tracks that you may or may not like. Those with a focus on Steppers DUB will definitely want to check out the album, in fact every lover of DUB Reggae should.

As said in the opening paragraph, tune called "Business of War" and it's heavyweight DUB counterpart is reason enough to download the album. Definitely one of the hardest Steppers DUB recently reviewed right here in the Dubroom.

  WWW, September 2012 - Straight from the French (DUB) Reggae underground, this very interesting one filled with eleven titles all starting with the letter C. C as in Conscious, even though there are hardly any lyrics in this no-nonsense instrumentalist Reggae album.

"Conscious Rasta" is indeed interesting for a variety of reasons. Much thought has been put in the music, both in the samples as well as the (excellent) instrumentation and overall concept. Expect an album that is filled with intelligence and style, as you listen to the instrumentals with nuff Dub effects here and there you will definitely recognize the amount of work that has been put in it.

The production itself has an interesting combination of programmed and played parts. It has an analogue vibe without becoming too much like an old-skool album. You just don't really know what is played and what is programmed and it's a real challenge to try and decipher just what exactly is put in the mix.

Even though this is not a DUB album avant la lettre, it has more than enough mixing work. Even though it is an Instrumental Reggae album avant la lettre, it will also appeal to those that are looking for echoings, reverberations and other vibes we know from Dub.

  WWW, August 2012 - In this brand new release by the french based Original DUB Gathering Net Label, we hook up with Full DUB, producer based in Dijon France. Spaced out DUB with loads of digital effect, vocal snippets and elements of Dubstep, even tolerable for those that don't specifically like the dub-derived style.
Six tunes, filled with examples of Full DUB's creativity. Definitely based on the Reggae rhythm, with strategically placed excursions into the broader digital domain. This is some high quality, intelligent music in this August the third twenty twelve release of Original DUB Gathering.

One thing that stands out is the fact Full Dub changes from the Steppers Drum rhythm into others and vice versa. A concept that's not used a lot, especially not in Reggae. It shows the creative experimentation which occupies the French producer as he trods on in DUB Space.

Brain Stage, the second installment in what hopefully turns out to become a line of releases, as Full Dub leaves you wanting more every time you play the last tune of this mini-album.

  WWW, August 2012 - The third installment of FRESH POULP's Tentacle of DUB Compilation Series gives an oversight in not only DUB but also styles that derive from it, like Dubstep. A style that not every lover of DUB will apprecilove in the same manner, and so this album does not just contain Dubstep but also styles "closer to home", let's say.   "Don Dub" by Malta-based Mind's Eye DUB is the fourth track and the first upright, no-nonsense Roots Reggae track. Some great melodica and the typical bubbling organ. It's followed by Ackboo's "Holy Mount Zion" featuring Steve Steppa: a hard hitting steppers rhythm as the Book of Bibles is quoted and excellent singing is done.

Mahom's "Darker, Stronger, Dubber" is your typical digital Steppers DUB with loads of changes and filters, candy for the ear of those that can and do apprecilove some electronic DUB. Over here in the Dubroom it is definitely received with joy! The very same can be said about "Dubalalla" by A Man Called PJ: massive drum and bass at the foundation of a continuous stream of sounds and effects.

The albums closes of with "Praises", a great track by the Roots Revival Sound System. Praises to the Most High JAH in a Roots Reggae DUB Style. Yes, there is more than enough material in this third chapter of Dub Tentacles to make you want to download and listen.

  WWW, August 2012 - Steppaction could best be described as a combination of heavy duty steppers dubs and more psychedelic material wherein you can hear all kinds of soundscapes and voices heavily mixed. Not all the tracks could be seen as DUB as there are combinations with elements Drum&Bass, but the ones that can be should be!   There's not much information on the Internet about Algar, other than that he seems to be based in Sweden and Germany (LINK). It's also clear that he's inspired by the current and recent developments in the UK and the rest of Europe when it comes to heavyweight DUB sounds.

Check it out, you might find some very nice tunes. In fact, you will!

  WWW, August 2012 - They focus on basically "everything electronic" at Fresh Poulp, which includes DUB and Roots. This rings through at the selection of their DUB TENTACLES compilation series but in no way that should keep you from checking out the second chapter.   For example, the excellent opening track by the Spanish band Hot Drop, of which we reviewed quite some stuff here at mp3.dubroom.org. Although there's little DUB in it, the Roots Reggae Band doesn't disappoint those looking for the better Reggae.  Or Panda Dub's "First Meet", an upfull and righteous Steppers with vocalist Youyou. A floorshaker fe real! Barbes D is present with a cool tune featuring singer Sammy Gold, crucial DUB there!

Get the album and pick out the gems that are truly on there.

  WWW, August 2012 - They're based in Nancy (France), from where they release and perform Conscious (DUB) Reggae in a very pure and heartical form. On their WEBSITE, you can find video's capturing the Ire Vibes and on the album "Net Tape" you can enjoy some of their own productions Inna Showcase Stylee!   Featuring guest vocalists like Mighty Howard and Solo Banton, Livity Access' "Net Tape" contains 15 titles, out of which there are several vocals with their Dub versions. The excellent "Ire Soldiers", for example. Or "Manifest", a call to legalize the herb instead of maintaining repressive laws on herb, based on lies.

Then there is "Meditation" featuring Mighty Howard: the vocal part is done with a One Drop style where the Dub has a Steppers drums. An interesting concept. So interesting, that they continue with the idea in the Vocal part of "Always War", quoting Haile Selassie's famous speech which was set to English by Bob Marley.

WWW, August 2012 - It's so amazingly obvious that it's genius: a compilation based on that instrument which "every" DUB producer has used at least once, other than the bass or drum. If only for this, the DUB VIBRATIONS NET LABEL should be applauded for their original idea to create a compilation of DUBS with the Melodica. But there's more...

This is not just a gem for DJ's and selectors, although it is kinda nice to have a set of very, very nice DUB tunes with melodica at hand. Because that is exactly what this album actually is: a very nice album filled with crucial DUB tracks from some well-known and lesser known names in the online scene of DUB producers.

The album gives a pretty good idea of what came out of the original "Far East Sound", established when virtuous keyboard player August Pablo started blowing the melodica over DUB tracks. The Far East has become the World Wide Web, which becomes clear throughout the over one and a half hour long compilation. Everything perfectly mastered by Don Fe from the DUB VIBRATIONS NET LABEL in his Spain-based studio, by the way.

El Bib, the other half of the duo that runs the label, takes and also deserves the credits for the excellent selection. The tracks showcase the melodica by simply exposing the versatile nature of the instrument in a DUB Reggae environment.
