APR ROOTS REGGAE MIX VOLUME 1

APR ROOTS REGGAE MIX VOLUME 1
DUBROOM MP3 REVIEW

WWW, November 2008 - Except for an excellent Mad Professor release, Roots Reggae Mix Volume One is a hard hitting Rub a Dub Showcase that you can't afford to miss out!

Rub a Dub: Basically, we are talking about Jamaican Dancehall Music before Dancehall became more or less distinct from Reggae in the mid 1980's. Music, which could no longer be called Rockers but was Reggae still.

It began around 1978, 1979 and it went to let's say 1985, 1985. The music became slower, DUB Mixing became a must even in the vocal parts. Deejays went on to have an even more prominent position in Reggae, even more than Dillinger and Jah Stitch.

Long versions, wherein the vocal part could be heard along with a DUB or DJ version, also became more and more obligatory. Albums with such long versions came out as well, often called "Showcase".

DJ APR ("Always Playing Roots") from the Creation Sound in San Diego knows his Rub a Dub. In this first episode of his series of Roots Reggae mixes, he also shows that he knows how to make a Showcase.

Thirteen titles, thirteen riddims. More than twenty-six tunes!

Singers, DJ's, DUB mixers, they all unite in this excellent selection that you simply can't afford to miss when you are out there in Cyberspace to find some essential, crucial, hard-to-find Reggae.

LUCIANO - IT'S ME AGAIN JAH
DUBROOM VIDEO REVIEW

WWW, November 2008 - In 1993, Luciano introduced himself to the people of the world, and to JAH, with an impressive musical track and video clip.

This is it.

Luciano, aka The Messenger. In the early 1990's he entered the global scene with a new kind of Roots Music, dubbed by this website as "contemporary Roots". It was a time where cokane and violence ran the dancehall and violence ran the place more than ever before.

Nowadays, we know him as a long dreadlocked singer, but back in the time he was still growing them. He was growing his faith, too, but by looking at the video and feeling the vibes in the music, you can easily see that that faith was already solid as a rock.

MYSTERY BABYLON (190)

Dubroom Online - November 30, 2008

"MYSTERY BABYLON (190)" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, November 30 2008 - When I discovered the real -spiritual- nature of the "Christian Reggae Scene", I was at a point wherein I knew myself to be in Babylon.
I knew, that I had to treat that "Scene" as Babylon.

I knew, I had to Step Out.

However, that wasn't so easy.

Throughout the time, I had been mixing and basically -spiritually- fornicating with people who I should not -spiritually- mix with.

Even though you could argue that I did it for the right reasons, well, you can do the wrong out of right reasons.

Still don't make it right.

More Tomorrow...

One Love, Give Thanks,

When LKJ entered the scene, the music that came with his poetry was deep, and hard. DUB effects and everything was there. In fact, it was LKJ's "Five Nights Of Bleeding" that got yours truly hooked on Reggae, somewhere in the early 1980's.

In 1992, the vibe had totally changed. Dennis Bovell, the musical genius behind LKJ, had taken himself and his musicians to higher grounds and they started to experiment with other styles, which they integrated with Reggae.

The result could be an upfull, ska-ish track with Africa style guitar licks.

Like "Di Good Life".

MYSTERY BABYLON (189)

Dubroom Online - November 29, 2008

"MYSTERY BABYLON (189)" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, November 29 2008 - As soon as I realized that the "Christian Reggae Scene" was nothing but a spiritual brothel where an abomination called the "Gospel Reggae Industry" was being produced, I started to do what many have tried throughout the ages.

They tried to REFORM Babylon, rather than STEPPING OUT.

I tried to stay inside of the scene, doing my best to propose -let's say- a "reformation".

I knew myself surrounded by wolves and parasites of the worst kinds. People who made no secret of their disdain for everything related to Reggae and Rastafari.

And what did I do?

WWW, November 2008 - In Reggae, several vocalists will use the same Riddim to voice their lyrics over. Over the Oneness riddim, for example: a cool contemporary Roots Reggae One Drop.

Luciano opens up this presentation of the Oneness Riddim, and he is followed by not only a long list of names: he is also followed by a wide variety of styles these vocalists use.
It shows the Power of Reggae: every one can join in and do his own thing.

Thanks to the German based Roots Ministry, who compiled and skillfully mixed this short presentation!

WWW, November 2008 - Usually, they are in the background, barely mentioned, while in fact they do all the work. Channel One Studio Band the Roots Radics ask your attention, please!

Sly and Robbie were part of the first Studio Bands of the legendary Channel one studio's in Jamaica, where just too many Roots Rockers and Rub a Dub is recorded to mention.

After the Aggrovators and the Revolutionaries, it was time for the studio to come up with their third band. The name was the Roots Radics, as they played one Rub a Dub after the other into the multitrack recorders at Channel one.

They are barely mentioned on the albums and the concert posters, when they performed to back this singer after that DJ. They played album after album, where only the DUB engineer took the credit.

Now this is changed.

Here is the Roots Radics, starring: The Roots Radics!
