BIG YOUTH AND SOUL SYNDICATE LIVE IN CHICAGO 1981

BIG YOUTH AND SOUL SYNDICATE LIVE IN CHICAGO 1981
DUBROOM MP3 REVIEW

WWW, December 2008 - When the first 4 minutes of sound checking is over, the recording starts and gets more and more interesting as the Soul Syndicate open up with some crucial instrumentals only to go over and serve as the backing band for Big Youth.

The year is 1981. Studio band the Soul Syndicate has made a name as well did Big Youth, who toasted over many Dub riddims allready. The band and the DJ decide to take the concept on stage and they do so in Chicago, Illinois.

In the city where Al Capone has his syndicate, the Jamaican artists bring some upfull vibes. Starting with a little sound check which takes about 4 minutes, the band follows to open up for the MC with a set of nice instrumentals.

When Big Youth enters, the atmosphere is already strong and the result is a strong concert, as Big Youth toasts and sings. In that singing, you can hear how this served somehow as an inspiration for later artists like Sizzla.

However, this was still in 1981 and you can hear that in the recording as well as the instruments. Know your history, know your destiny!

YELLOWMAN AND MIGHTY DIAMONDS - HAVE MERCY

YELLOWMAN AND MIGHTY DIAMONDS - HAVE MERCY
DUBROOM VIDEO REVIEW

WWW, November 2008 - A rare video with an exceptional combination: Yellowman meets the Mighty Diamonds in a gathering that is too sweet to ignore!

Yellowman stand synonymously with, let's say, dirty lyrics. The bulk of it was meant as a joke because Yellowman himself is severely handicapped due to the fact that he is an albino, but many have not caught the joke and maybe not everything was that funny indeed.

However, none of that in this special tune. A remake of the classic Mighty Diamonds track "Have Mercy", we also hear and see the singers whose sweet voices are never too much. And we meet the King of Dancehall, as he chants along with the rhythm and the singers.

Crucial!

MYSTERY BABYLON (199)

Dubroom Online - December 9, 2008

"MYSTERY BABYLON (199)" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, December 9 2008 - As I am Stepping out of the Babylon that is the "Christian Reggae Scene" which later became the "Gospel Reggae Industry", I am applying mechanisms which can be used whenever one has to Step Out Of Babylon.

I realized who I am, and I started to speak the Truth. Two steps.

My third step was to not bow down for any pressure from any side. As I got attacked in almost every possible way, I got rejected by a lot of people too.

My fourth step?

Well, I haven't figured that one out yet. But I did try to share with you a little bit of what I have come across in my life and research about this Big Mystery.

More Tomorrow...

One Love, Give Thanks,
Messian Dread (Dubroom Webmaster)

WWW, November 2008 - In this video, we meet Black Uhuru with Sly and Robbie and a whole lot of other musicians in the studio. The vibe of the 1980's is perfectly captured, where the music could have been played today as well.

Sly and Robbie have been using their cooperation with the vocal group Black Uhuru to produce some of the most progressive Reggae at the time. It captured the vibe of the time, just like Burning Spear and Bob Marley had done before, which led them to introduce Reggae to a new audience.

When they produced "Bull In The Pen", Sly Dunbar was heavily involved in the digital drum kit, which he used in ways nobody had done before. We see him playing along with Robbie Shakespeare and a lot of other crucial musicians.

Niceness!

MYSTERY BABYLON (198)

Dubroom Online - December 8, 2008

"MYSTERY BABYLON (198)" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, December 8 2008 - Throughout this last month or so, I used my own story as I Stepped Out Of the Babylon that is now the "Gospel Reggae industry" as an example of the bigger picture.

My first step, was that I realized I was not in the right place. I equally knew that I was not created to be doing what I was supposed to be doing in that "Christian Reggae Scene", namely to Konform to Babylon's Norm.

My second step was to start Speaking the Truth. Not, that I was speaking lies before that, but I mean with this, to say the Truth when it must be said and not to bow down for the pressure that came from the slaves who were seriously disturbed in their Komfort Zone as I was speaking out.

BURNING SPEAR LIVE AT REGGAE SUNSPLASH 1986
DUBROOM MP3 REVIEW

WWW, December 2008 - This historical recording gives us Winston Rodney and his Burning Band performing in Jamaica during the time of his album "Resistance".

A Burning Spear performance is an experience. It has been so for decades, now. Take this concert: it brings us back to 1986, when Rub a Dub was hot and digital devices entered in the studio... and on stage.

Burning Spear has always done his own thing while around him all these things were happening and developing. Sticking to his own form of Roots Reggae, also in the times of Yellowman and Barrington Levy.

No difference here, either.

The concert gets hotter and hotter, better and better. Just like the recording, that is. Listen through the first 15-20 minutes and hear the quality improve.

Another piece of Reggae Niceness fe true!

BLACK UHURU - ORIGINAL FOREIGN MIND
DUBROOM VIDEO REVIEW

WWW, November 2008 - Black Uhuru's name is inseparably connected with the names of Mikal Rose, Puma Jones, Duckie Simpson, Sly and Robbie. In this video, we see only one of them.

Don Carlos and Junior Reid are two great Reggae vocalists who have been members of Black Uhuru throughout the group's history. In this video, we team up with Junior Reid as the lead vocalists with Duckie Simpson as everlasting member of the group.

Junior Reid obviously has the voice that keeps everything together, while many people will surely miss the drum and basslines by Sly and Robbie as well.

Still, this is not a video to skip, as we see Junior Reid doing a wonderful performance. Original Foreign Mind in itself has become a classic, which says a thing when considered neither Sly nor Robbie was there.
