MAKIN' DUB (4)

Dubroom Online - January 19 2009

"MAKIN' DUB (4)" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, January 19 2009 - When I make a DUB, I always start to make an instrumental Reggae track first.

Usually, I start with the drums. I program a rhythm in the Drum Computer, just a basic rhythm. This can be a Steppers, or a One Drop, or another rhythm.

I put the drum in a loop and start adding other instruments in the sequencer. Usually, my first choice after the drum is the bass and there is hardly an exception to that tradition.

When the drum and bass sound nice together, I know I have the foundation.

It's the thing with DUB, you know: it doesn't really matter what you put on top of it, as long as you have a solid drum and bassline. This is a very important aspect that not even all Reggae musicians know!

MAKIN' DUB (3)

Dubroom Online - January 18 2009

"MAKIN' DUB (3)" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, January 18 2009 - DUB is basically a de-construction of music and it started with Reggae. Still, Reggae is the best music to make DUB with, even though this is not a must.

Instrumental Reggae music is recorded on several tracks, and the recorded material is then later mixed in the studio by the engineer.

I make my Dub according to the very same principal as that which was applied in Jamaica during the 1970's and 1980's, even though I am not a preterist and do not fear modern technology at all.

The principal, however, is that I will make an instrumental Reggae track which I will then transform into a DUB at a second phase in the process.

This is a thing that not every modern DUB producer applies, by the way...

MESSIAN DREAD - DUB OF THE COMPUTER HACKER
DUBROOM STAR SELECTIONS RELEASE

This is the 4th track of the album "DUB Shall Go On", released from January 15 to January 24 2009.

Another One Drop drums, this time with a different bass drum and of course a completely different riddim than the previous track of the album "DUB Shall Go On".

Echo's totally transforming the original instruments, sudden stops of the music: sometimes you go deeper than the deepest ocean, the other time it's like free flying in the sky.

MAKIN' DUB (2)

Dubroom Online - January 17 2009

"MAKIN' DUB (2)" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, January 17 2009 - As soon as I heard the first DUB in my life, I was hooked. I knew, instinctively, that this was the music of not only my style, but also my life.

I can't explain, I know, I sound like a teenager and I'm in my forties. But I can't stop that initial identification with what I heard when I heard the rhythms of the drum and the bass.

A few years after I heard DUB for the first time somewhere n the early 1980's, I started voicing over DUB and in 1987 I founded a band.

In that time, I also started my excursions into the art and technique of making DUB from recorded music.

After all, DUB is first and foremost a Studio Music, even more than Reggae.

MESSIAN DREAD - DUB OF THE FORBIDDEN BLESSING
DUBROOM STAR SELECTIONS RELEASE

This is the 3rd track of the album "DUB Shall Go On", released from January 15 to January 24 2009.

After two heavy duty Steppers, it's time for a little chilled-out vibes. A solid One Drop drums and matching bassline serve as the foundation for a weird gathering of sounds and vibes created by effects and instruments.

A perfect tune to accompany your enjoyment of a blessing that is forbidden in most places where Babylon pirated Jah Creation.

MAKIN' DUB (1)

Dubroom Online - January 16 2009

"MAKIN' DUB (1)" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, January 16 2009 - As my latest net album is released, I am -although never satisfied concerning my efforts- grateful to know that I have been able to significantly expand my possibilities lately.

I can use much more musical instrument and -more important- effect devices now. More mixing boards, more echo's, more of everything.

These last weeks, I have been experimenting with different ways of applying the effects over the instruments.

I feel like a child in the candy store as I am routing one loop after the other in what has become a rather complicated set up for my digital productions.

I hope you can share my enthusiasm as some new material is released...
