"THE CONVERSATION CONTINUED..." (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, August 26 2009 - Recently, the Dubroom published a conversation between online artist David Pablo and myself. A long conversation, but nevertheless read by many people who have something to do with the Online (DUB) Reggae Artist Community.

The conversation continued on the Dubroom Message Boards, where it quickly became of the most read threads.

Not surprisingly, though: it's an exchange between two -at times- opposing views, who do agree over the fact that Reggae Music must be promoted.

This exchange could provide the reader with some inspiration or reasonings for the many changing times and things currently taking place within the Online (DUB) Reggae Artist Community.

"JAH MUSIC" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, August 25 2009 - One reason why Reggae does not get the recognition that the music deserves, may very well be found in the fact that it is not only common, it is -in some ways- a must for artists to give praises to the Almighty in at least one title.

The biblical roots of many things related to Reggae Music is clear for even the casual observer. Dreadlocks, just like Samson in the Bible, the worship of Jah, Whose Name is praised by everyone who says "HalleluJah", all these things show why Reggae Music is so often called "Jah Music".

It doesn't mean that all these artists really mean what they sing with all their heart and soul, obviously. But I think that the number of genuine praises to the Most High within Reggae Music exceeds that of the whole "Gospel Industry".

A SHORT REVISIONIST'S LOOK AT MUSIC HISTORY

Dubroom Online, Edition August 24 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition August 24 2009

"A SHORT REVISIONIST'S LOOK AT MUSIC HISTORY" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, August 24 2009 - Behind the scenes, Reggae Music played a larger role than usually admitted by the historians and therefore reasonably unknown to the general public.

Toasting had a huge influence, not to say was the major influence for styles like Rap and Hip-Hop to come into existence.

When the instrumental versions became Dubs, the Art of remixing was born and we do not need to say just how important the remix factor is, especially in contemporary music.

The concept of Dub, a drum and bassline with effects and strategic dropping in and out of instruments and vocals, is also a perfect description of styles like House and Techno.

Indeed: Reggae Music most definitely does not get the credit it deserves. Maybe it's time for some revisionist music history?

FR DUB

image

Dubroom Online, Edition August 23 2009

"FR DUB" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, August 23 2009 - Just recently, the Dubroom reviewed quite a few online DUB releases by French Artists on French Net Labels.

It's a form of DUB/Roots which has a lot of similarities with UK DUB and Roots, but there is definitely a French Touch to it which justifies the statement that yes, there really is such a thing as "FR DUB".

One interesting similarity with UK DUB is, that both genres could sometimes be filed as Dance just as much as Dub. A missing link, if you will, between contemporary forms of digital music and traditional Reggae Music.

Another interesting similarity is the fact that within both genres, there is a significant amount of conscious material released. Which is really much needed in this time and Iwa.

UK DUB

click

Dubroom Online, Edition August 22 2009

"UK DUB" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, August 22 2009 - I don't know about you, but I love some good UK DUB.

Usually, that would be a combination of digital and analogue instruments and effects, together with either some crucial Dub mixing or uplifting vocals, or both.

I can listen to it for hours in a row, preferably with some extra bass even though UK DUB isn't really lacking anything in the low frequencies, generally.

The sound is hard to describe, but one selector of contemporary digital music said to me UK DUB starts where House Music ends, which has everything to do with the prominent role of the bassline.

(Steve) Vibronics is one good representant of this specific discipline within Reggae Musicology, and the fact that there are quite a few free/legal Vibronics MP3's enables everyone to check out his productions out for themselves at no risk at all.

MP3 MUSEUM

Dubroom Online, Edition August 21 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition August 21 2009

"MP3 MUSEUM" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, August 21 2009 - As the biggest possible clean-up of the Dubroom MP3 Portal is being done, the portal's "MP3 Museum" is growing significantly.

In this museum, people can see on what they have missed out. You can also say, that the museum provides an inside look in just what was available and what is available now.

Nice music on MP3.com and DOWNLOAD.com, for example. Even though every link to these sites is nicely redirected to LAST.fm, a lot of online artists do not have free downloads on that site and so they can no longer be in an MP3 portal.

However, as -Jah Willing- we continue the Dubroom Online MP3 Reviews, the MP3 Portal will have a much more interesting set of reviewed material than before.

A LITTLE PIECE OF NICENESS

Dubroom Online, Edition August 20 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition August 20 2009

"A LITTLE PIECE OF NICENESS" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, August 20 2009 - As Dubroom Online continues to release one MP3 Review (with direct download link) per day, and that not of the least of artists, you could say that there is Niceness Galore in this time.

Nuff Niceness, but still, there is place for some extra stuff that some visitors/readers of the Dubroom will may find interesting even though they would not really expect it on this site (or blog/forum).

We're talking about a rarity: a band which uses Reggae as their inspiration rather than sticking with the original concept gets a review in the Dubroom.

The band signed up with Easy Star Records and are about to release an album called "Solid Ground" on the label. Somewhere next months, it should be available. You can already download two tunes from the album for free, which is just a little piece of niceness.

GOOD LABELS

Dubroom Online, Edition August 19 2009

"GOOD LABELS" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, August 19 2009 - In a time wherein the major labels scream bloody murder over the fact that people download MP3 files on the Internet, there are some others who see it all as an opportunity.

They donate free music to the online massive, so much, that in itself the collection is quite impressive. As one track per day is presented via Dubroom Online, they won't yet be mentioned in the MP3 Portal.

However, after a few months, mp3.dubroom.org will look quite different indeed. In the meantime, I'm working very hard to clean up the portal so that it will be more interesting than ever before to take a look.

It's a pleasure to select and review the material, it is a more than reasonable to provide buy-links too as this is a very friendly way to market music.
